First bra guide for teens

If you are a teen, you are either excited or embarrassed and nervous to get your first bra. Both are pretty normal feelings.

First of all: It is a big thing! Congratulations!

Probably you want to know how to get your bra, which kind to get, what size to get, where to get it, how will it feel, what your friends will think, and most importantly… what the boys will think! Etc…

First, try to turn to your mom and ask for help. I think you should be pretty straightforward and tell her that you probably need a bra. You should ask her what she thinks about it.

It could go two different ways. Either she will say… "Sure, I will be happy to help!" or, she might question why you need one since you are still pretty small.

If your mom questions why you need a bra, just be very honest about your feelings. Tell her how uncomfortable you feel now that your breasts have started to show through under your shirt. Don’t be hysterical! I am sure she will listen. It might takes a day or two for her to realize that it is time for her to help, but I think eventually she will help you.

Sometimes parents feel just as uncomfortable as you do to talk about growing up stuff. Maybe because they felt the same when they were teens and maybe their parents did not help them either and now they don’t know how or what to do. You can also offer some solutions to your mom on how you want to do it. You could say to your mom that you can get your first bra with your friends and the only thing you want is the permission from her. She will probably like this. She will feel that you respect her and want to involve her in your life.

Where should you go to get your first bra?

Target and JCPenney’s will have some. If you want designer training bras, I would check your local discount stores like TJ Max’s, Kohl’s and Marshall’s. Expect to pay between $10-35 per bra.

You can also check them out online. My recommendation would be bras made by CC Girl. About colors… although white is always a safe bet, all the other colors are great but remember, no colored bras under a white shirt! Keep that in mind when you are shopping.

What size should you get?

You need to know what size of clothes you normally wear. Lots of times girls are saying that it feels so uncomfortable to wear their bra. Well, it shouldn’t. If you or one of your friends feels uncomfortable it just means that you girls are not wearing the right size. It will feel a little weird the first time, but not uncomfortable. If you see any skin marks under your breasts or on your shoulders, then you are probably wearing the wrong size bra. If you have skin marks, then you should go one size up. If the shoulder straps are falling off your shoulders, then try to adjust them or try on a smaller bra.

How to take care of your first bra?

Bras without cups do not really require any special care. Once you have a bra with cups, you want to either hand wash them or you can buy a little plastic bra holder to put your bra in and then toss it in the washer. If you don’t have this gadget just be sure to clip the back part together, otherwise it will tangle up with your other stuff. This will cause your bra to stretch and it will ruin your bra for sure. Definitely wash your bra after 2 wears. The lifetime of a bra is probably 6 months, but if you are growing faster then you will need a new one sooner.

What will boys think about you?

Don’t pay too much attention to them. They will either, 1) Not even notice, 2) They will not even care, 3) Giggle a little bit and then forget about it, or 4) Think that you are amazing. Boys mature so much slower at this age. Some of them just don’t get it. So, don’t be bothered.
