Training bra guide for small breasts

If you are here you either:

1. A teen and looking for some guidelines about your first training bra, or

2. A parent and wonder how to approach getting the first bra for your daughter, or

3. You are just a girl with small boobs who never grew out of a training bra and you are looking for some changes.

First comes first:

Why is a training bra called training?

Training bras are for young girls who started to show some elevation of their breasts. Basically it is for girls who started to develop their breasts. These bras will help girls to get used to a real bra.

Training bras are necessary?

Yes and No.
No because they don’t provide the support like a normal bra does. 20 years ago, young girls just went without a bra. But in today’s world, training bras are more necessary for social purposes. It is intended to "cover up" and to help not show the breasts through a shirt.

What age should you start to wear a training bra?

It is not really the age of the girl but more the size of her breasts that counts.

Some girls start to develop as early as age 8, some later. Girls can be influenced by their friends and it is possible that they want one even if they don’t need one. It depends on where you live and what culture surrounds you. In the US it is totally acceptable to wear one as early as age 6-7, but in some other parts of the world that would just look ridiculous.

Training bras or sports bras? What is the difference?

They look alike, but they are different. Training bras don’t provide too much support, if any. Sports bras are for playing and performing sports and exercise and are made for all sizes of women. Sports bras actually keep the breasts from moving around. The material contains spandex which is a synthetic fiber, while a training bra is made out of cotton most of the time.

Are training bras come in different sizes?

Definitely. It is important that you get “fitted”. The second best guide to figure out what size of training bra to get is to know what is your girl size (for the clothes you wear). If you wear a girl size 10, the band size of bra is 28, for size 12, the band size is 30, size 14 is band size 32 and size 16 is band size 34. These are only average numbers and can be a good guide to help you in understanding what to get.

When is it time to change from a training bra to an A cup bra?

Whenever you feel comfortable to do it, and when your breasts are big enough to fill an A cup. Get yourself measured or punch in the numbers here to get to know your size. If you still small and not able to fill an A cup yet, try to find AA cup bras. Department stores have small collection most of the time.

You could try it online. These stores carry bras from size 28 AA. Also Playtex has what is called Half Sizes Too. They carry sizes called "Nearly A" sizes as well.
